By default, the Developer tab in Microsoft Excel will not be visible when you open a new Excel workbook. If you plan on recording macros or writing custom VBA code, you will want to enable the tab so you can have access to the functionality the tab provides. Making the tab visible is simple. This is something you only have to do one time. Once you have enabled the Developer tab, every time you open a new workbook, the tab will be visible. To do this, follow the steps below.

Enabling the Developer tab on a Windows computer

If you are using a Windows version of Excel, you go to File > Options to bring up the Excel Options window. Next, click on Customize Ribbon and then check the checkbox next to Developer on the list of tabs shown on the right. With that checked, click the OK button. The Developer tab should now be visible.

Enabling the Developer tab on a Mac

If you are using a Mac version of Excel, you go to Excel > Preferences and then click the Ribbon & Toolbar icon. Next, check the checkbox next to Developer on the list of tabs shown on the right. With that checked, click the Save button. The Developer tab should now be visible.
